A Chabad house is a centre for disseminating Hasidic Judaism by the Chabad movement. Chabad houses are run by a Chabad shaliach (emissary) and shalucha (fem. for "emissary"); the two are often married. Chabad Jewish Center is a family-oriented learning center with a home-like, intimate atmosphere of inclusion and acceptance. The center offers innovative adult education classes, Q and A during services, community kiddush, and creative holiday celebrations with family programming for the Jewish enrichment of all. Jewish communities have often used Passover to protest about global injustice.

Schneersohn’s tenure coincided with the early years after the Bolshevik revolution, as the communist leadership enforced an official state atheism that made life difficult for the Jewish community. Schneersohn was arrested and imprisoned for counter-revolutionary activities and eventually forced to leave Russia, living for a time in Latvia and in Poland before arriving in the United States in 1940. Several movement-wide controversies have occurred in Chabad's 200-year history. Two major leadership succession controversies occurred in the 19th century; one took place in the 1810s following the death of the movement's founder, the other occurred in the 1860s following the death of the third Rebbe. The movement's other major controversy is Chabad messianism, which began in the 1990s. Each sent out large numbers of rabbinic emissaries, known as "Shluchim", to settle in places across the world for outreach purposes.

In the year 2000, Fishokoff reported, 51 new Chabad facilities were established in California alone. Chabad’s campus network is active at 500 universities, 284 of them with permanent representation, in the United States and abroad. Though not numerically the largest Hasidic group in the world, it is by far the best-known and the most visible thanks to decades of outreach work seeking to bring non-religious Jews closer to their faith. Chabad is unique among Hasidic groups for its eagerness to engage with the broader Jewish community, its embrace of modern technology and communications tools to spread its message, and its global presence. From Memphis to Mumbai, Bangkok to Boston, there is scarcely a major city on the planet that does not have a permanent Chabad presence.

He was frequently visited by foreign heads of state and visiting dignitaries. In 1994, he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the only rabbi and at the time only the second clergyman to receive it in over 200 years. It is also sometimes known as Lubavitch (or Chabad-Lubavitch) after the town in Russia where the movement was centered for much of the 19th century. Jewish groups have staged a number of high-profile antiwar actions in the US since 7 October, shutting down sites from the Capitol to the Statue of Liberty.
